About Brian O'Neill
I have managed my own independent clinical supervision practice for more than 15 years, working with groups and individuals across a wide variety of social care organisations. I have worked with prescribing and sexual health units, children’s services, homeless, alcohol, mental health and community outreach services, with professionals who provide both face-to-face and telephone support to their clients. I have worked with teams of nurses and doctors on issues such as alcohol dependency and withdrawal, and dual diagnosis. I have also organised and facilitated training events around sexual health and HIV for large groups of medial professionals. I also provide consultancy, crisis intervention and mediation services. In total, I have delivered in excess of 30,000 hours of clinical supervision, primarily to groups, through my independent practice.
My supervision work involves exploration of case presentations, examining best practice and exploring the impact of service deliverance on professionals and clients alike. I work with practitioners to identify restoration and support needs and use a variety of training methods to help with the identification of these areas of need. Central to my work is the facilitation of practitioners to reflect on their work in order to explore and acknowledge what they are doing well and what they could be doing differently. I have substantial training and experience in models of non-violent communication, which has enabled me to work with others on issues around resolving conflict and identification of needs of both staff and service users.
I have substantial experience of planning and facilitating team development training and have also recently devised my own workshop for social care professionals on supervision skills, practice and dilemmas.
My work approach is based around a person-centred model aimed at assisting clarification of individual staff needs within the context of organisational requirements, holding an ethical framework that acknowledges the clients, the staff and the agency. Integral to my work is the importance that I place on facilitating challenge within a ‘safe enough’ environment.
